The Niger State Government has chosen to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir in a subdued manner, paying tribute to lives lost in the devastating flood that struck Mokwa and nearby areas.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has called off all large-scale Sallah festivities across the state.
This includes popular events like “Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other celebrations in all emirates of the state.”
The directive came through a statement released on the 4th of June, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman.

“This decision is to show respect for the victims of the tragic flood and to allow time for mourning, prayers, and reflection,” he stated.
Governor Bago also asked residents to turn their attention to prayer and compassion.
“We call on the good people of Niger State to use this Sallah period to pray for the departed and to reach out with love and support to affected communities,” the statement added.
Over 200 people were confirmed dead, and more than 500 remain missing after the flood, making it one of the worst disasters to hit the state in recent times.
