Edo Governorship Election Tribunal Relocates to Abuja

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has announced its relocation from Benin City to Abuja.

This development was disclosed in a notice dated January 24, 2025, and signed by the Tribunal Secretary, Mu’azu Bagudu.

The notice informed all parties involved in the case of the relocation, stating, “I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January, 2025.”

Although no official reason was provided for the relocation, the move has sparked speculation among political observers and stakeholders in the ongoing governorship election dispute.

The relocation of election tribunals is not uncommon in Nigeria, often attributed to security concerns or the need to ensure neutrality and a conducive environment for proceedings.

However, the absence of an official explanation has left room for varied interpretations.

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has been handling disputes arising from the 2024 governorship election, with various political parties and candidates contesting the outcome.

The Tribunal’s relocation to the National Judicial Institute in Abuja is expected to bring a new dimension to the proceedings as all parties prepare to adjust to the change in venue.
