Edo Crisis: Gov Okpebholo, PDP Clash Over Responsibility

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed sharply on the 5th of June, 2025, over recent flooding in Benin City and surrounding areas.

Heavy rains on the 3rd of June, 2025, caused significant flooding across parts of the state. Reports said homes were submerged, and key roads became impassable for hours.

Through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo raised questions about the $150 million former governor Godwin Obaseki claimed to have spent on flood control, pointing to the widespread flooding as proof of failure.

The PDP fired back, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) government nearing its first year in office of turning to their predecessor “like their messiah” whenever they face challenges, which the party blames on the APC’s incompetence.

Edo PDP Publicity Secretary Chris Nehikhare, in a statement, dismissed Okpebholo’s explanation that the flooding resulted from alleged mismanagement of erosion control funds under Obaseki’s administration, calling it an excuse for leaving Edo unprotected during the annual heavy rains.
