Samsudeen Apelogun, the Amir Hajj for Ogun State, has expressed concern over the sharp drop in the number of prospective pilgrims for 2025, attributing the decline to the ongoing economic struggles.
He revealed that, unlike last year, which saw at least 1,200 intending pilgrims, this year only 675 have shown interest in the pilgrimage.
Addressing reporters on the 29th of April, 2025, Apelogun assured that the state was fully prepared for the pilgrimage, vowing to improve the welfare of this year’s pilgrims even further.
The Amir Hajj confirmed that Ogun State’s first flight of pilgrims would take off on the 12th of May, 2025, with the return flights scheduled for the 12 and 13th of June respectively.
“Due to the current economic challenges in Nigeria, the number of pilgrims has dropped significantly,” Apelogun explained. “Last year, we had over 1,200, but this year, it stands at just 675. Despite this, we will ensure their welfare is even better catered for than last year.”
He emphasized the importance of representing Ogun State well in Saudi Arabia, stating, “Our primary duty is to ensure the comfort of the pilgrims while maintaining smooth operations in collaboration with the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), aviation, and Saudi authorities.

Our goal is to ensure a safe and successful pilgrimage and the safe return of all pilgrims.”
Apelogun also expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for entrusting him and his team with the responsibility, pledging to prioritize the state’s interests above all else.
“By Allah’s grace, we will strive to do our best. With over ten experiences in the pilgrimage, we will use this opportunity to enhance the work of our Board and ensure the governor does not regret his confidence in us,” he stated.
He concluded with a strong word of caution to pilgrims, urging them to maintain discipline and avoid any actions that could damage Nigeria’s reputation.
“Saudi authorities are intolerant of any form of misconduct. We urge all pilgrims to stay focused on prayer and supplication, avoiding anything that could tarnish our nation’s image. May Allah answer our prayers.”
