Defecation in open places, residential buildings without toilet facilities attract N5,000, N50,000, N200,000 fines in Oyo

Defecation in open places and residential buildings without toilet facilities will henceforth attract N5,000, N50,000 and N200,000 fines respectively in Oyo state. 

A bill to this effect tagged Oyo state Open Defecation Prohibition Bill is being sponsored  by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Deputy Speaker, Hon. Abiodun Fadeyi and Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Owolabi.

The bill which has passed its second reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly condemned the act of defecating in open places, especially in urban centres.

The act, as contained in the bill said the practice posed a great challenge to the health of the people, and, if not checked, it could result in outbreak of epidemic in the state.

The lawmakers, during the deliberation pointed some areas in the state, especially urban centres where the practice was rampant.

The bill added that the government owes the people constitutional responsibility of providing mobile toilets in public places such as market.

The bill reads in part, when the bill is passed into law, the Magistrate Court or Environmental mobile court will have the duty to try offenders while the State commissioner for Environment shall be empowered to ensure that the provisions of the bill are implemented to the letter.

In particular, the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources or designated Agency of government shall be detailed to enforce provisions of law.
