A fatal explosion occurred on Taiwo Street in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Thursday, April 3, 2025. The blast resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to three others, prompting a response from emergency services and law enforcement.
The Lagos State Police Command has officially confirmed the explosion. Preliminary investigations indicate the incident was accidental, stemming from the handling of dangerous ordnance.
According to initial reports, the incident unfolded when a scavenger discovered military-grade grenades within a collection of scrap materials. The scavenger’s attempt to dismantle one of the grenades triggered its detonation, resulting in fatal injuries. The force of the explosion also caused injuries to three bystanders who were in close proximity.

The Lagos State Police Command received a distress call at approximately 1:30 p.m. in response to the explosion. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, based in Ikeja, was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, verified the incident. In a statement to SaharaReporters, Hundeyin confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway.
The police are urging residents of Idi-Araba and the wider Lagos metropolis to exercise heightened vigilance and to promptly report any suspicious items or activities to the authorities.
