Court Halts Pro-Wike Rally in Bayelsa

A Bayelsa State High Court sitting in Yenagoa has slammed the brakes on a proposed political rally in support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Justice I.A. Uzakah, on Thursday, issued an interim injunction restraining Wike’s allies from staging the event, which had been scheduled to hold in Yenagoa on April 12, 2025.

The ruling followed an ex-parte application filed by the Bayelsa State Government through its Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo (SAN).

The suit, marked BYHC/YHC/CV/133/2025, lists the NEW Associates — the rally’s organisers — along with prominent Wike loyalist, George Turnah, and Wike himself, as defendants.

Also joined in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State.

In the court’s enrolled order, Justice Uzakah directed all listed parties — and any individuals acting on their behalf — to refrain from organizing or participating in any political gathering aimed at celebrating or showing solidarity with Wike within the state. The injunction remains in place pending the determination of the substantive motion on notice.

The matter has been adjourned to April 11, 2025.

This development comes amid rising political tension in the state, with Governor Douye Diri recently stating that Bayelsa would not permit any rally perceived to be a show of political strength by the FCT Minister.
