Buhari to Nigerians: Support Tinubu’s Painful Reforms, Curb Your Expectations

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended warm congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his midterm milestone, offering both praise and pointed advice as the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration marks its second year in office.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari described leadership as a “continuous journey” and called for steadfast support for Tinubu’s administration.

“As the party and the government celebrate, the country should be reminded that leadership is a continuous journey,” Buhari stated.

The former president acknowledged the difficulty of the economic reforms being undertaken by the Tinubu administration, especially in the face of poverty and inflation, which he said have “hit the poorest families the hardest.” He, however, maintained that meaningful change takes time and should not be derailed by “nettlesome domestic politics.”

“The task of reducing poverty and inflation, which is immense, must not be left only for the government. The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” he said.

Buhari urged Nigerians to remain optimistic, stressing the need for patience and collective effort as the country navigates economic challenges.

“Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he cautioned.

Ending on a personal note, Buhari wished Tinubu continued strength and wisdom in leadership.

“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” he concluded.

The statement comes amid growing public debate over the state of the economy and the effects of the Tinubu administration’s policy reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation.

The midterm anniversary provides a moment for reflection, with Buhari’s intervention signalling both a gesture of solidarity and a subtle reminder of the complexities of governance in Nigeria.
