Attack on Sudan Hospital in El-Fasher Kills 70, Injures 19

A deadly attack on Saudi Hospital in El-Fasher, a besieged town in western Sudan, has claimed the lives of 70 people and left 19 others injured, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described the incident as “appalling,” revealing that the hospital was crowded with patients receiving care at the time of the attack.

“The appalling attack on Saudi Hospital in El-Fasher… led to 19 injuries and 70 deaths among patients and companions,” he wrote on X.

The attack has drawn international condemnation, with Saudi Arabia denouncing it as a “violation of international law and international humanitarian law.” In a rare statement addressing healthcare targeting in Sudan, Saudi Arabia called for the protection of medical and humanitarian workers, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid harming civilians.

Sudan has been in turmoil since April 2023, when a power struggle erupted between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has unleashed widespread violence, particularly in Darfur, where the RSF has besieged El-Fasher since May.

While armed-aligned militias have managed to repel repeated attempts to seize the city, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen.

The latest attack highlights the perilous conditions for civilians in Sudan, where tens of thousands have been killed and over 12 million people displaced.

Famine has ravaged parts of the country, forcing desperate families in western and southern regions to rely on grass and animal fodder for survival.

The international community has repeatedly called for an end to the violence, but peace efforts have so far yielded little progress.

As the humanitarian toll mounts, the attack on the hospital underscores the urgent need for renewed global attention to the crisis in Sudan.
