Arsenal Win Appeal: Lewis-Skelly’s Red Card Overturned

Arsenal have successfully appealed against the red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Wolves, meaning the 18-year-old will not serve a three-match ban.

The left-back was controversially sent off in the first half at Molineux for tripping Matt Doherty during a Wolves counterattack following an Arsenal corner.

Referee Michael Oliver brandished the red card, but the VAR did not intervene, a decision that frustrated Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

The call was widely criticized, with former England captain Alan Shearer labeling it “one of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.”

In a statement, the Football Association confirmed the successful appeal, saying:
“An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension.”

Lewis-Skelly, who has impressed in his debut season with the Gunners’ first team, is now available for selection against Manchester City and Leicester in the Premier League, as well as the crucial second leg of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.

Despite playing with 10 men for nearly half an hour before Wolves’ Joao Gomes was also dismissed, Arsenal secured a late victory through Riccardo Calafiori’s goal, keeping them within six points of league leaders Liverpool.
