Army Smashes Lakurawa Terror Network in Kebbi, Sokoto — GOC

The Nigerian Army has dealt a heavy blow to the dreaded Lakurawa terror group operating in parts of Kebbi and Sokoto states. Major General Ibikunle Ajose, who commands the 8 Division and leads Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma, confirmed this during a meeting with defence reporters in Sokoto.

Recent military offensives, he said, have wiped out several camps used by the group.

“We have destroyed their camps in Kebbi and Sokoto. Though they are mobile and often cross into the Niger Republic, we are working closely with Nigerien forces to ensure they are not given room to regroup,” he said.

While hailing the success of the operations, Ajose acknowledged the price paid; some soldiers lost their lives, others are recovering from injuries.

He emphasized how collaboration with locals in remote communities made the operations more effective. Many residents, he said, now provide timely tips on bandit activities.

“In areas where we maintain a presence, locals support us with information. But where we’re only seen during emergencies, trust is lacking.

That’s why state governments must provide these communities with basic amenities, so they feel carried along,” he explained.

On fears about terrorists using drones, Ajose said his men were alert and had already handled such a threat.

“They haven’t tried again since then. We’re fully prepared for such threats, with both training and technology,” he stated.

He also addressed accusations of soldiers aiding criminals, saying the military takes such claims seriously. Plans are already in motion to impose life sentences or the death penalty on any personnel caught supporting bandits.

Ajose urged journalists to play their part by asking deeper questions and digging beyond headlines.

“We welcome constructive criticism, but journalists should go deeper, not just report incidents. Help us draw attention to the issues through factual reporting,” he said.
