The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning to the “Take It Back Movement” ahead of a planned nationwide protest set for Monday, April 7, 2025—a date now recognized as National Police Day.

According to a press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed concern over the timing of the demonstration, which coincides with an official day set aside by the Federal Government to honour the resilience and dedication of police personnel across the country.

While the NPF acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, it questioned the intent behind organizing such an action on a day that is expected to attract top government officials, foreign diplomats, and Inspectors-General of Police from around the world to celebrate Nigeria’s police institution.

“This protest is coming at a time when the nation is set to celebrate the contributions of the Nigeria Police to national security. It appears to be a deliberate and unpatriotic attempt to undermine the integrity of the Police Force and the image of Nigeria at large,” the statement read.

The Police warned that staging protests on the same day as the commemorative event could cast a shadow over what is meant to be a historic and prestigious occasion, aligning with global best practices of recognizing law enforcement efforts.

The statement also reaffirmed the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., in ensuring that the Force continues to uphold citizens’ rights while fulfilling its mandate under the law.

Nevertheless, the Police urged the protest organizers to consider dialogue and institutional engagement as more effective and respectful means of pressing their demands, rather than disrupting a national celebration.

As the country awaits how the “Take It Back Movement” will respond, all eyes are on Monday’s dual timeline—one that may become a symbol of both celebration and confrontation.
