The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai for their recent attacks on President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, APC spokesperson Felix Morka described their accusations as “pitiful” and dismissed claims of the party’s alleged interference in opposition affairs.

Morka specifically rejected Atiku’s assertion that Tinubu was paying ₦50 million to opposition leaders to destabilise their parties.

“The bizarre suggestion by opposition figures like Atiku, Peter Obi, and recently, aggrieved leaders like Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, that our great party may be complicit in the internal corrosion of opposition parties, is pitiful and only an incompetent alibi for their crass failure to manage their own affairs,” he said.

The APC also accused Atiku of hypocrisy, citing the controversial elections conducted during his tenure as Vice President under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“It was in the Atiku era as Vice President, particularly in 2003 and 2007, that the PDP conducted the worst elections in our political history,” Morka stated.

Atiku had, during a national conference on strengthening democracy held in Abuja on Monday, warned that judicial involvement in electoral matters could threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

However, the APC dismissed this claim as unfounded and ironic, given Atiku’s history of extensive electoral litigation.

“It is a thing of irony that Atiku, who is Nigeria’s most prolific electoral litigator, would make such a ludicrous claim that judicial involvement in electoral matters is a threat to democracy,” Morka said.

The ruling party also accused Atiku of focusing on “petty politicking” instead of rebuilding his party.

“We deserve better than petty politicking and alarmist rhetoric from an elder statesman,” the statement added.

The APC further argued that Nigeria’s democracy remains robust and that Atiku’s political ambitions are not enough to undermine it.

The party urged him to respect the democratic process and work towards the nation’s progress.
