The Labour Party’s National Executive Committee, led by Julius Abure, has made it clear that the party will not join any coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This announcement comes amid growing efforts by opposition figures, including PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, to form a unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday ,May 2, after the party’s NEC meeting, Abure said the Labour Party under his leadership had no interest in surrendering its independence to any alliance.
“NEC declared that the Party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 General Election,” the party said in a communiqué.
“The party will rather continue to rebuild, reposition, re-strategise, reconcile, strengthen, drive its programs and policies, win more members towards winning the 2027 General Elections.”

The communiqué also stressed the party’s commitment to internal unity:
“NEC expressed its commitment to continue to seek peace and reconciliation within the ranks of the Party and again extends an olive branch to all aggrieved members of the party to sheath their swords in the overall interest of the Party and our dear Nation.”
Reaffirming the party’s democratic values, the NEC added, “NEC reiterated its belief in the Nation’s Democracy and the party’s commitment to its growth and deepening as the only means to national development.”
In a further move to enforce discipline, Abure set up a committee to investigate allegations of anti-party activities, including those reportedly involving Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
He also hailed the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Labour Party’s internal leadership dispute, saying the verdict clarified the party’s legal standing.
