A fresh spotlight now beams on Nigeria’s oil sector, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, begins probing former top executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, over “alleged misappropriation of funds and abuse of office.”
At the heart of this unfolding drama are former chief executives, Mele Kyari, Abubakar Yar’Adua, and others, accused of diverting a staggering $2.96 billion earmarked for the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries.
The move follows a letter dated the 28th April, 2025, sent to the Group Managing Director at NNPC Towers, Herbert Macaulay Way, Central Business District, Abuja.

The EFCC is zooming in on how the funds were shared across the three key refineries:
• $1.56 billion for the Port Harcourt refinery
• $740 million for Kaduna refinery
• $657 million for Warri refinery
